Orange UK unveils the Intel-powered San Diego

Orange UK has recently unveiled the first Intel powered smartphone destined for the UK. The San Diego is powered by the Intel Atom Z2460 (more commonly known as Medfield) chipset clocked at 1.6 GHz. The 4 inch display has a 1024 x 600 resolution, while the rear camera has a sensor size measuring 8 MP.
The San Diego will be available from Orange starting this Wednesday
There is a full gigabyte of RAM inside and 16 GB of flash memory but no word on a MicroSD slot. It will have a dedicated HDMI output and weigh 117 grams. Unfortunately it comes running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with no word on an update to Android 4.0.
The x86 based processor raises some issues of its own, considering Android was made for ARM devices. However, Orange says it has worked closely with Google to ensure applications run smoothly on the Intel chip. The handset itself will be launched in the UK on June 6. Pricing will begin at £199.99 upfront or free on a £15.50 per month, 24 month contract.
