Meet All 13 Fallout 4 Companions

Around a dozen companions will appear in Fallout 4. Along with the familiar Dogmeat the Dog and Mr. Handy the Robot, new characters like Piper, Preston Garvey, and others can become companions.
Players may have one companion accompanying them at a time and may switch between them. Some companions may be Romanced, forming relationships through various gameplay.

Preston Garvey

Preston is the de facto leader of the Minutemen, a Faction committed to the protection of innocents. Preston is first encountered in Concord at the Museum of Freedom. It's possible to initiate a romance with Preston.

Preston walks the straight and narrow and is impressed by acts of charity and selflessness and in a player's efforts to help the innocent. Preston favors energy weapons. Recruit Preston by completing The First Step.


Codsworth is a robotic servant and the first potential companion encountered by the player. He hands around your old house in Sanctuary.

Codsworth is a moralist and disdains wicked behavior. He is a fierce melee combatant. Recruit Codsworth after completing Out of Time.


Piper is a reporter in Diamond City. She is a fierce and aggressive character and a good combatant.

Piper appreciates anti-authoritative behavior. Recruit Piper after completing Story of the Century.

Nick Valentine

Nick is a Synth prototype and private investigator stationed in Diamond City. Nick is a smooth-talking hacker and locksmith.

Nick is greatly concerned with moral behavior and does not tolerate unlawful or merciless actions. Meet Nick at the conclusion of Unlikely Valentine.


Curie is a modified Mr. Handy instilled with a personality matrix based on a variety of prominent scientists. Curie lives in a hidden section of Vault 81.

She can be recruited at the conclusion of Hole in the Wall.


Deacon is a Railroad sympathizer and a compulsive liar. He adapts his attire constantly changing appearance to match his surroundings. He is a skilled hacker and infiltrator.

Deacon appreciates kindness to Synths and performance of hacking and lock-picking tasks. Deacon will join you in the Tradecraft mission.


Maccready is a mercenary and former Gunner. He is a skilled combat sidekick.

Maccready is grasping but appreciates decency and sincerity. You can recruit Maccready in The Third Rail in Goodneighbor.


Dogmeat is a dog. He has powerful search capabilities and can often locate hidden items. Dogmeat can also hold and pin enemies.

Dogmeat can be recruited outside the Red Rocket Truck Stop just south of Sanctuary.


Strong is a Super Mutant companion and an extremely powerful fighter.

Despite his appearance, Strong is a generally ethical character and prefers you treat others with respect and generosity in conversations, though he's not necessarily opposed to murder and revels in violence. Strong can be recruited at Trinity Tower.


Danse is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. A powerful fighter, Danse is very handy in battle.

Danse appreciates civil behavior. He can be recruited at the Cambridge Police Station.


Cait is a former raider and rough-around-the-edges Scrounger. Cait is a drug addict, a harsh critic of moral norms, and a vicious combatant. 

Cait disdains what see sees as signs of weakness, including unnecessary timidity and mercy. Cait can be recruited in the Combat Zone


Hancock is a Ghoul living in Goodneighbor. Instantly identifiable from his Revolutionary-era uniform, Hancock is a dangerous rogue and fighter.

Hancock is violent but fair, vicious but not sadistic, and appreciates most moral acts. Hancock can be recruited in Goodneighbor.


X6-88 is an Institute-allied Synth and a dangerous ranged fighter.
X6-88 can be cruel but is rarely sadistic. he appreciates shows of strength. X6-88 can be recruited in The Institute.
