Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB (Rev 2 w/ backplate)

On July 1st we reviewed one of the first Sapphire R9 390 Nitro cards out of the factory. Sapphire since updated the card, adding a back plate and increasing the clock speeds – and today we present a follow up review of this enhanced model which is available from UK retailers for £269.99 inc vat. We also test the hardware with the latest AMD Crimson drivers and compare against a myriad of other models from AMD and NVIDIA partners.

The Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB is a triple fan solution with a newly fitted backplate, understated in appearance yet exceptionally well built. We look at the card in more detail on the next page of the review.
Out of all the current range of AMD hardware, I firmly believe the R9 390 is the best card they sell. When overclocked it is often faster than the high end R9 390X with enough money left over to get your family a nice Christmas hamper.

The 300 series launch around 18 months after the 200 series has meant that AMD have been able to enhance the ASIC design by implementing microcode enhancements and the manufacturing processes have improved. We can consider the 390 an ‘improved 290’ – with the added bonus of double the memory – an increase from 4GB to 8GB.
In reality Sapphire were releasing 8GB cards before AMD made the ‘official’ move but that is why they have always been considered the most important of all of AMD’s partners – they tend to push the envelope before anyone else.

The Nitro range of cards follow a very specific style – they are predominately black with silver accenting. It is a good looking card with three fans taking up the full length of the PCB underneath. This time there is a ‘Sapphire’ branded backplate fitted to the PCB which will hopefully reduce the hotspots we noticed last time we tested this solution.

The card is equipped with a dual link DVI-D connector, three DisplayPort 1.2a connectors and a single HDMI 1.4a connector. Sadly, no support for the new HDMI 2.0 standard – which means you can’t get 4K 60hz from this connector. This is something I do depend on myself as I use a 4K Sony TV for my gaming (which has only HDMI ports).

The card takes power from two eight pin PCIe connectors. It has bridge less Crossfire support, exactly like the 290 and 290x.

The big change over the first revision that we tested back in July, is the newly fitted backplate – shown above.
We can see the GDDR5 memory is directly cooled from the heatsink above. 10mm heatpipes expel heat from the copper heatpipe, across a large rack of aluminum fins which span the full width of the PCB. The diecast heatsink bolts into the PCB to help improve rigidity. Sapphire equip the card with their Diamond Black chokes to help improve stability and longevity.

An overview of the Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB Rev 2 w/ Backplate. It is built on the 28nm process, has 64 ROPs, 160 Texture units, and 2560 unifed shaders. The core is clocked at 1040mhz, 30mhz faster than ‘Revision 1’ which we reviewed in July. The 8GB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1,500mhz, or 6Gbps effective – an improvement over the R9 290, which on the reference design was set at 5Gbps effective.
We already know the R9 390 is a powerful card priced at a reasonable amount of money. In my opinion the R9 390 is the jewel in AMD’s lineup – at £269.99 inc vat you can overclock this solution to perform better than the more expensive R9 390X.
We used the latest version of MSI Afterburner to overclock today.

We managed to push the core to 1,133mhz, around 9% faster than the preoverclocked ‘out of the box’ settings. The GDDR5 memory could be enhanced to 1,637mhz before artifacting would occur (6.5Gbps effective).
All our graphs today highlight, performance from the Sapphire R9 390 Nitro at ‘out of the box’ speeds, along with a yellow arrow pointing upwards to indicate results at 1,133mhz/1637mhz. This will show what you can expect out of the R9 390 architecture before it reaches a limit. Obviously not all cards will overclock to the same level, but this is a good indicator. We also want to see how a manually overclocked R9 390 will compare against a reference R9 390X.
On this page we present some high resolution images of the product taken with a Canon 1DX and Canon 28-70mm F2.8 lens. We have also selected some new game sections to benchmark during our ‘real world runs’.
Additionally, even though it is not close to being finished, we wanted to include some findings from an early access build of the (Windows 10) Direct X 12 capable Ashes of The Singularity by Stardock (website HERE) – this uses the Nitrous game engine. We are confident this is not an indication of how the game will run when it reaches retail at a future date, but still, it is interesting to showcase today. You can buy it from STEAM, over HERE.

The R9 390 Nitro manages to outperform the GTX970 at the out of the box speeds, and when overclocked it comes within a few points of the more expensive R9 390X.

At the Ultra HD 4K resolution, the R9 390 when overclocked to the limit, manages to slightly outperform the R9 390X. Excellent results.
Unigine provides an interesting way to test hardware. It can be easily adapted to various projects due to its elaborated software design and flexible toolset. A lot of their customers claim that they have never seen such extremely-effective code, which is so easy to understand.

AMD cards generally tend to suffer a little in this benchmark compared against Nvidia. The Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB averages around 50 frames per second when manually overclocked. The Palit GTX970 card doesn’t perform at the same level.

We test at 3840×2160 (4K) with the ‘ULTIMATE’ image profile selected. We normally reduce the image quality profile to ‘ULTRA’ at this resolution, but we decided to keep it at the highest image quality possible.

If you believe that 25 frames per second is the breaking point for smooth motion, then overclocking the card means this engine is playable at Ultra HD 4K at these settings. Reducing the image quality settings a little would help ensure the frame rate held above 30 at all times.

4K is a tall order, even for the R9 390. Ideally you would need two of these cards in Crossfire to achieve super smooth frame rates at this resolution and these settings.

We test at 2560×1440 with the following settings: Quality-Very High, SSAA-off, Texture Filtering-16x, Motion Blur-Normal, Tessellation-Normal, Advanced Physx-off.

This is really no indication of how the final Direct X 12 game will run, however we can see the R9 390 is clearly outperforming the GTX970. The Fury X is the strongest AMD performer in the chart.

We have seen dramatic changes in performance between game patches. There is no working Crossfire or SLI profile right now sadly.
The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 23c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this.Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes. Load measurements were acquired by playing Crysis Warhead for 30 minutes and measuring the peak temperature. We also have included Furmark results, recording maximum temperatures throughout a 30 minute stress test. All fan settings were left on automatic.

The triple fan cooler performs very well, holding gaming temperatures at 63c under extended load.
We install the graphics card into our system and measure temperatures on the back of the PCB with our Fluke Visual IR Thermometer/Infrared Thermal Camera. This is a real world running environment playing Tomb Raider for extended periods of time.

The image above shows the Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB Rev 2 with backplate – under our thermal imaging camera. We can see the temperatures are held below 60c at all times, and there are no really discernible hot spots.

The image directly above is the original thermal image from the first revision Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB (without backplate) which we tested back in July this year. If you ever needed to see the difference a backplate can make, this is a good indication. Almost 30c difference under extended load.
We have built a system inside a Lian Li chassis with no case fans and have used a fanless cooler on our CPU. The motherboard is also passively cooled. This gives us a build with almost completely passive cooling and it means we can measure noise of just the graphics card inside the system when we run looped 3dMark tests.
We measure from a distance of around 1 meter from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation. Ambient noise in the room measures close to the limits of our sound meter at 28dBa. Why do this? Well this means we can eliminate secondary noise pollution in the test room and concentrate on only the video card. It also brings us slightly closer to industry standards, such as DIN 45635.

The card is quiet under gaming load, and barely audible next to a case fan. The triple fans spin to produce a fair bit of air, but their pitch is quite low so it is not really that audible. The card exhibits no coil whine under synthetic stress situations.
We measure power consumption from the whole system when idle and when gaming, excluding the monitor.

The Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB consumes 332 watts when fully loaded. This is 3 watts more than the GTX980 ti reference card we have. We hope the next generation of AMD hardware is a little more efficient.
This is an unusual review – in that we have already reviewed the original Sapphire R9 390 Nitro 8GB, back in July this year. I was very impressed with this solution although I did note that the lack of backplate did cause a few hotspots to appear after intensive gaming sessions.
Sapphire have since then updated the card, pushed the core clock further, and added a custom ‘Sapphire’ branded backplate to the PCB.

Sapphire asked us to revisit the ‘Rev 2 backplate’ version of the hardware before Christmas and our thermal imaging camera shows a temperature reduction of almost 30c from the PCB to backplate. The Thermometer page earlier in this review has more information on this, along with direct captures from the thermal imaging camera.
The R9 390 may not be the fastest card that AMD sell in their current lineup, however I am still convinced that it is their best product. When you factor in the £269.99 price point and the overclocking capabilities of the hardware, you can save money over the 390X and overclock it to the same performance level. The latest Fury range of cards are certainly faster, but they are still very expensive and out of reach for most gamers.
